Six Questions You Should Ask Before Buying a New Carpet
The process of buying and caring for carpets isn't complicated, but a few professional tips can help.
In our experience with carpets, we've compiled a list of six essential questions to ask before choosing the right carpet for your home.
1. Which room are you buying carpet for?
Think about where you will put the carpet. The high traffic areas (stairwells, hallways, etc.) require carpets that will wear well and retain their appearance, while bedrooms can be fitted with more luxurious carpets since they do not receive such constant use. As for the living room, wool and wool-rich twist pile carpets are extremely durable, while easy-to-clean polypropylene carpets are stain-resistant and bleach-cleanable.
2. How much is your budget?
Keep a realistic perspective. As with anything, carpet can be very cheap or very expensive. Calculate how much you want to spend, but don't forget to include the cost of underlay, fitting and other materials.
Make sure you do your research online and consider ordering free samples so that you can get a feel for the type of carpet versus the price and see if it's right for your room.
3. What is your top priority? Material? Shade? Maintenance?
Think about your family, your home, and what's important to you. For a carpet that's easy to clean, look for a carpet made with 'family friendly' fibres, such as the Sensation, Primo, and Apollo collections, which are all stain- and dirt-resistant. You might also want to consider our easy-clean carpets - most of which come with a 10-year stain and wear-resistance guarantee.
4. What should you do after you've found the carpet you like?
Find a reputable online carpet retailer. We will work with you to determine the most cost-effective way to carpet your home; ask you plenty of questions so we can determine what carpet to use; we will discuss the various options and let you take a larger sample home so you can see how the carpet looks with other home furnishings. The more conscientious online carpet retailers will always recommend having the room professionally measured in order to ensure the right amount of carpet is ordered. This will minimize waste and save money.
5. Is a new underlay needed?
Yes, absolutely! An underlay of good quality can prolong the life of your carpet - either rubber or foam. In order to achieve the best results, a new and firm underlay should be laid on a clean and dry floor.
6. What is the earliest you can deliver the carpet?
Don't be afraid to ask, but usually your carpet can be fitted within days of your purchase. As autumn is the busiest time for carpet retailers, you should buy your carpet during off-peak times if you need it to be installed right away. There is a lot to consider, such as getting a convenient time for both you and your carpet fitter, so ask your retailer for advice.
The majority of our carpets are manufactured in Great Britain & Europe, and with our own nationwide delivery fleet, we can deliver within 48 hours to all of our customers.
