Are you Ready?
Now first things first, the most important thing is to stop feeling daunted! Vinyl Flooring is your friend and it will behave really well. It will be delivered in either plank, sheet or tile format so you can lay it with minimal effort. Follow this guide to get the floor of your dreams without breaking a sweat.
1. Prepare the sub-floor
So the first thing you need to do is ensure you have a good starting point. As with most flooring options its critical to have the sub-floor nice and prepared for its new cover. Make sure its clean and is clear of any nails and debris. Its important there’s nothing poking out from between the floor boards and nothing that can compromise your vinyl floor. By design vinyl flooring is soft underfoot but that also means that if your sub-floor has any bumps, knocks or bits sticking up they’ll show when the Vinyl is laid! Not a good look, spend some time at this early stage getting your sub-floor looking plush clean and as flat as a pancake because a bit of care is going to go a long long way. If its a new floor, make sure its all dried properly and the compound you’ve used to level it has aired properly. Always let your new Vinyl acclimatised for 24 hours out of its packaging.
2. Install the Vinyl
Measure each side of your room, you need to get this bit spot on but also allow for an additional 15cm of material as overrun just in case you’re running slightly short. Also direction is important, when you’re laying your new Vinyl remember to try and follow the direction of the primary source of light in your room. If its an especially narrow room then vinyl should always run length ways. Depending on the size of the room, you have options for how to secure the vinyl to the floor. If its a small room something under 12 metres, a loose installation will usually suffice. This means simply lay the vinyl over the sub-floor and you’re good to go. For a larger room, so anything between 12 and 25 metres squared, or even a room that will experience a higher than normal level of traffic, then its a good idea to use vinyl floor tape. This double sided tape should be ran around the centre and edges of the room. It will easily secure the vinyl in place. Finally for those larger rooms over 25 metres squared, we would always use a vinyl flooring adhesive. We have a range of all accessories required to install the flooring yourself, take a look here.
3. Finishing
So its all flat and lovely looking but what about those edges, doorways and joins I hear you say? Well, Flooring Direct have got you covered, we have a range of beading and solid oak profiles and end caps that will finish the job beautifully, whats more they’re really easy to install. You need to measure the area or perimeter you want the edging or beading to run, using a saw you can mitre the edges to ensure a lovely fit and secure it in place with a glue or even a hammer and a nail. Finally, all that’s left for you to do is put the kettle on, sit back and admire your beautiful new vinyl floor!
