Laminate flooring – Why it’s time to celebrate it.
First of all, Happy New Year! And Happy New You… and Happy New Home! Yes, a lot of people are beginning the new decade by restyling their houses and their home. Below, we list why laminated floors are becoming so popular and explain the exciting reasons behind it!
Not only do they look nice and are stylish, but the maintenance to keep them looking clean is actually not that much. Our laminate flooring care guide explains a little more about ensuring your flooring looks smooth and clean. Fundamentally, laminated floors provide your living room or hallway with the look of beautiful and solid hardwood flooring, without the expense and maintenance that comes with it.
Fortunately for you, at Flooring Direct there is a wide range of laminate designs for you to pick from, as these floors can be designed and styled to look exactly how you want them to. Laminate Oak is one of our best sellers, but there are also other options to choose from. If laminate floors are definitely what you are after, then you are in the right place.
Furthermore, you may have settled on the type of flooring you want, but not necessarily on the style. With laminate flooring, these designs could be perfect for your kitchen, your living room or your hallway.
It may look perfect, but what does a laminated floor consist of?
When you look at a laminate floor, would you be able to tell the difference between wooden flooring and laminate flooring? With an oak finish which you have chosen to make your hallway stand out, you might be wondering what enables flooring manufacturers to provide such a silky finish. Well, we can tell you here.
Think of laminate flooring like a Double Cheeseburger. You have the bottom half of the bun, the top half of the bun and in the middle are the two burgers, the real substance! Consisting of four layers, laminate flooring is stabilised by different materials. The bottom half of the burger is a stabiliser, a base layer in other words. Then comes a layer of High-Density Fibre (HDF) on top of the base layer, all glued together to ensure that the flooring sticks together to do its job. The top burger is the decoration. It is a graphical paper image which you have chosen and has been designed and embossed to look so realistic that it is hard to know the difference. If you have chosen Oak Laminate flooring then this is where it is made to look like Oak. Lastly, completing the burger is a hardwearing surface which helps the floor and the decorations to withstand the increased volume of traffic which comes about from visitors and bigger families. However, ultimately, all products these days are hardwearing.

Maintenance of laminated floors (What there is of it)
When you are trying to clean your floors, the temptation is usually to dig out a mop and get mopping, but with laminate flooring, we would advise against this. However, you are able to use a dry mop with a douse of water to try and get any marks of the surface. Hoovering and sweeping would be your best bet but try not to scratch it. The odd bit of surface water would not affect your floor, but it is highly likely that covering the surface in water could cause a bit of damage. The chances are that your kitchen is laminated, and this is where spillages would occur.
The temptation would also be to add a shine to your laminate floors because you want to keep it sparkling, but it should naturally look after itself. Laminate flooring is good because it tends to keep its shine, although there are some who insist that vinegar and hot water is perfectly acceptable. Remember, our care guides can help you to look after your floor in whichever you room you choose to install your flooring. Using an acidic material, however, could potentially harm your protective cover on your flooring.
Similar to if you have a wipe-clean sofa, you need to protect your laminate floors by getting to the wet spills immediately. Leaving it there could damage the floor. If you have pets and are looking for pet-friendly flooring, then laminate floors are good, but not if this is where you are planning on keeping your dog’s water bowl. Recommendations include placements under a pet’s water dish, but also other places that are likely to be prone to spillages.
