Is it easy to install laminate flooring?

Laminate flooring looks lovely, doesn’t it? Everyone in the offices at Flooring Direct loves the idea of having laminate flooring in their living room. But many also ask us the boss the same question: Is it easy to install laminate flooring? Well, we’ve decided to answer this question further afield.

How to install laminate flooring?

How to install laminate flooring? It’s sometimes known as click flooring because it clicks together. Sounds so simple, doesn’t it? Well, it can be! The hardest part about installing a laminate floor is ensuring you have all the necessary tools to be ready for it.

Taking advice from flooring fitters and the boss (he used to be one), we’ve put together an article on how to install a laminate floor and how easy is it to do?

Must-have items for installing laminate floors

Every floor fitter has been there. Well, any person ever who has done a bit of DIY has probably been there. Coming to install something and realising you’ve not got the necessary parts. Don’t worry, we can certainly help you with that here.

As with all flooring, you will need underlay, a tape measure (if you want to do it right) and patience. Measuring your room for flooring is so important. You may need a saw or some sort of cutting equipment to ensure that it all fits correctly. Luckily, with Flooring Direct, if you have already done your measuring then we should be able to provide you with the right amount of packs, and you may even have some leftover. It should fit perfectly, however.

Flooring Direct recommended items

As a floor fitter tells us when fitting any sort of flooring you are spending a lot of time on your knees. This would mean you would probably need some sort of support structure for your back and knees to help your posture. This is probably the hardest part about installing laminate flooring, the toll it takes on your body. But this is the case with all types of flooring, including carpet and vinyl. Other than that it is still quite easy to install a laminate floor.

Give the laminate floor a once over before you begin

Unfortunately, accidents happen. With Flooring Direct, we ensure that all packs of laminate flooring are inspected and fit for purpose before being delivered by our couriers.

When the courier delivers our floors via kerbside delivery, they are instructed by us to allow the customer around 15 minutes to inspect the flooring to ensure it is fit for purpose. If you, the customer, or the floor fitter finds any damage or defects then please do not begin installing the floor. This means we won’t be able to accept any returns or refunds for the damage. Flooring Direct is not able to validate any warranty if defective flooring is installed by ourselves.

Begin installing your laminate flooring

At Flooring Direct, we have over 20 years of experience in the flooring industry. Stemming from the top, our Managing Director and our Warehouse Manager all have experience in the flooring sector. We have provided our own installation guides which you should read before installing your flooring.

Whoever the supplier, the laminate should be able to be installed as it would be by anyone else, but sometimes suppliers do have different methods. Our Egger Oak Laminate flooring range is quite popular and is considered quite easy to install by suppliers.

This may sound simple but you’ll be surprised by how many people actually forget to consider what flooring is already down. For example, if the customer has carpet in their living room then they will also have underlay. This can be difficult to get rid of. You need to let the fitter know beforehand exactly what you have in the room where you are installing your laminate floor.

Giving your fitter a base to work on

Whether you are doing it yourself or have hired a flooring fitter, they need an equal base to start their work on. Once you have removed all the flooring, you then need an expansion gap because sometimes you may consider removing the skirting boards to install the floor and put them back on. Flooring Direct does offer beading which helps hide the expansion gap after the laminate has been installed, so don’t worry too much about that aspect.

Essentially, for a floor fitter or someone with a bit of DIY experience, installing laminate flooring is quick and easy to do. If you are looking to install laminate flooring in your home and are wondering where it is best to go, you can check out our recent articles on choosing the best flooring for your home. The only place we wouldn’t put laminate floors is in the bathroom because it gets so cold. But some people do!

Underlay for a laminate floor

You should by now have considered what you need and that you would need new underlay. It is essential that you have chosen to install the right kind of laminate flooring underlay. Take a quick look around and see what Flooring Direct can do for you. Once the underlay is down, the laminate flooring should just click together. Obviously, different suppliers and manufacturers will ensure that the flooring clicks together in different ways, but it should still be easy to fix.
