DIY – Installing Artificial Grass Ready for Summer!

Installing artificial grass with Flooring Direct

Now that summer is in full swing, we can’t wait to spend all of our evenings and weekends in the garden with a beer and a BBQ. But first, we want to make sure that your garden is summer ready and kitted out with artificial grass. At Flooring Direct, we appreciate how much of a difference an artificial lawn can make to a garden. The fresh and full looking grass can transform your outdoor area into an aesthetic, appealing space for all the family to enjoy.

Our grass is pet friendly, child friendly and has environmentally friendly features! Check out our Myth Busting blog to learn more about the benefits that artificial grass has to offer.

Anyway, lets get to it! Here’s a break down guide on how to install artificial grass:

Step 1 – Preparation

Ensuring you have a well-established surface on which to lay your artificial turf is essential. Remove your grass or clear your hard surface of debris ready to begin installing your new lawn. Purchase some of our Geotextile Membrane to line the sub-base in order to prevent any weeds from growing and provide a stabilised surface area.

Clearing debris

Step 2 – Sub-base

Begin to apply your layer of type 1 hardcore. This should rest at 50mm and provide a compact area on which to top with 25mm of builder’s sharp sand. The sand allows for successful drainage of any liquids that top the surface of your lawn. At Flooring Direct, all our artificial grass features a latex backing with drainage holes incorporated into the material. To assist with further drainage, we recommend laying your artificial grass on a slightly slanted surface.

TOP TIP – 1

Too much sand can cause dips and bumps, so we also recommend 75mm of granite dust as an alternative. You can proceed to use a grass roller in order to compact the sub-layers.

Step 3 – Membrane

Lay our Evergrass Weed Membrane across the entire area that you plan to cover with artificial grass. This is essential to ensure no weeds affect the appearance and functionality of your synthetic turf. Head to our Artificial Grass Accessories page and purchase some U Pins to secure the fit of the weed membrane to the outskirts of your lawn.

Step 4 – Grass

Unroll your fresh new lawn to cover the designated area from end to end. Leave this to settle and adjust to the environment for up to 24 hours before securing the fit. This will allow for any creases to fall out and for the pile to settle. Use a sharp trimming knife to perfect the sizing and fit of each roll of artificial turf.

Leave grass to adjust

PLEASE NOTE

Don’t panic if your grass arrives creased! Any creasing in your artificial grass should gradually fall out throughout the time it is settling into the area and its surroundings. The warmer weather will assist throughout this process, so summer is the perfect time to get your fake grass fitted!

TOP TIP – 2

Be sure to check the direction of the pile before rolling out your artificial grass. You might find you prefer the pile to be facing a certain way due to the shadowing/reflection.

Step 5 – Anchor

After 24 hours, you can anchor your artificial grass to the ground. With our 150mm U Pins, you can work your way around the perimeter of your lawn, securing your grass every half a metre. The thickness of the pile should conceal the head of the U Pins, so the overall appearance of your synthetic lawn will not be altered. If you have laid your artificial turf on a hard surface, you could instead use our GreenBond Adhesive to secure the fit of your new lawn.

Pining the grass

TOP TIP – 3

For some of our artificial grass, we recommend sprinkling and spreading some kiln dried silica sand on the surface to help with keeping the pile raised. This would be ideal for busy areas where high footfall and regular play activities are carried out!

To finish up, give your new artificial lawn a quick brush down to make sure all the blades are standing up, looking fresh and full!
