Artificial Grass in Autumn & Winter
It is a common misconception that artificial grass can only be installed in the warmer summer months when it can actually be installed all year round. In fact, artificial grass is easily installed in the autumn and milder winter months when the ground is not as hard as in summer. The durable nature of the grass means it can be enjoyed all year round without the risk of damaging its appearance or creating muddy patches. Due to the drainage holes in the backing of the grass it has the further advantage of fast drying time after rainfall*.
The ambient temperature is naturally lower in the winter months, therefore specific considerations need to be observed when rolling out the grass in preparation for installation. Artificial grass requires an optimum temperature of 10°c to 15°c during installation, which is easily achievable in our milder autumn and winter months. Should temperatures fall lower than this, we recommend that you roll out your grass early in the morning and allow it to acclimatise. With the rise in temperature throughout the day, it will help to smooth out any creases and make the installation easier.
In freezing temperatures, it is not generally recommended to lay artificial grass, however it is still possible to achieve a good installation with a couple of additional steps. If the temperature does not rise during the day, you may need to use an external heater to expedite the process, further to this you may need to seek advice on how you cut and join the grass to allow for shrinkage and/or expansion of the grass. Please do not be alarmed, this is only by a few millimetres but care taken at the installation stage can help to avoid minor issues with the artificial turf in the future.
Maintenance – Artificial Lawn Care in Winter
In the midst of winter, snow and frost do not cause any major problems to artificial grass. Caution should also be taken when walking on the grass when it is frosty or icy, as with any outdoor surface in the colder months.
After heavy snowfall, we recommend leaving snow, frost and ice to melt and drain away naturally. If snow or compacted ice removal is necessary, we do not recommend this by hand due to risk of tearing the grass. If shovelling the snow, use a plastic shovel not metal. Only occasional use of salt is advised, it will not cause harm to the grass but it can build up and block the drainage holes. Rake up any leaves on the lawn throughout the winter to clear debris which could cause the area to look unsightly and create slippery areas as the leaves decompose. This ensures the lush, springy and fresh green appearance is restored even after a spell under the cover of snow.
Artificial grass is the ideal lawn solution to the unpredictable seasonal climate here in the UK. It will stand up to heavy rain, dry spells, snow, ice and freezing temperatures whilst maintaining a fresh, green appearance, with no mud or mess.
